SUMMER TECH ADVICE

It’s summertime, the kids are out of school, and a lot of families have plans to spend time outside and away from home.  TCC has some tech advice for you to keep your kids and network safe and we want to tell you about a Wi-Fi service that you can take advantage of when you’re away from home.

First, make sure your Internet is ready for increased (and possibly unsupervised) Internet activity.  Some households may not see a need for increased speeds as the usage increase will be during times that are not seeing much usage now.  But it is worth keeping an eye on the number of devices connecting during peak times in your home and how many are watching video, streaming or gaming.  If devices start to see delays, buffering, or increased lag, then increasing the speed may help.

You may want to set up “guest networks” on your router for your kids and their friends to use for their Internet.  That way, they are not sharing the same network with your devices, printers, etc., which can pose problems for your devices, and it will be easier for you to manage the devices connecting in your home.  Speaking of devices connecting in your home, you may also want to set rules for usage on your network by user, device, and apps to keep a handle on the time spent online and content accessed.   With TCC’s “Total Wi-Fi” ($14.95/month), you can create profiles for each user listing their approved devices and approved apps/uses, and setting timeframes for approved access.  You can also set priorities by device and app so your devices will never be strained due to other connections.

Summer is also a great time to set up smart devices, including smart doorbells, cameras, and sensors, to help monitor your home and its visitors.  With a smart doorbell, you can see people entering your home and even interact with them in real-time.  With cameras, you can keep an eye on what’s going on in or outside your home.  And with sensors, you can get notifications when basements flood, windows are opened, or motion is detected.

There are also a lot of cool tech products that you might “dip your toes in” this year, like smart grills and smart thermometers, to help you with the cooking.  Smart grills and smart thermometers tell you the temperature of the grill and the food on it.  Smart grills can even adjust themselves automatically, based on what you’re cooking, so you don’t have to!

You can even take some of your services with you to the cabin or the campground, like your TV service and streaming subscriptions.  With WatchTVeverywhere, you can watch over 70 of the best cable channels from wherever you are — you just need Internet access and a device like a phone, tablet, or smart TV to watch!  And if you have a streaming stick, or even a smaller Smart TV, you can take that with you as well and watch all of your downloaded and subscribed streaming content.  Again, you just need an Internet connection!

Next Steps:

  • Check out your Internet speed
  • See what devices are connected and if you need to make changes
  • Determine what (if any) protections you have on your network and devices
  • Add a management system for your Wi-Fi like TCC’s Total Wi-Fi
  • Check into cool and helpful stuff like smart devices at any big box retailer
  • Don’t forget to look for reviews of those products so you buy the right ones!
